I’m Back and Better!👌🏾

Hey Loves,

This first sentence has been written so many times and backspaced just as many. I mean how do I honestly start off this post considering I haven’t written one in so long! Actually, that is not all the way true. I have been blogging in my mind for the past 8 or so months; those thoughts have just not made their way out of the chambers in my mind. I guess some have broken free now and it feels good to say I’m back and I’m better! What does that even mean, though? Sounded good when Bryson Tiller’s dulcet tones sang it in ‘Don’t’ but in my world, it means more than I may be able to express right now.

I wanted to take a break from social media. I wanted to take some time for myself, to understand some of the things I was going through. I wanted some of my mental to catch up with my physical change. Yes, I intentionally chose the word wanted! I needed to look after my health, which was telling me I was a priority and not an afterthought. I wanted to look in the mirror and not pick myself apart because what I saw did not match up to what was ‘liked’ in the fickle beauty industry.

You see, no matter how confident we appear we all have inner battles that require us to reset our thinking so we can remind ourselves how AWESOME we are! Awesome AF! Rewiring some of my thinking has pushed me. Challenged me. Trained me. Strengthened me. Life has taken a series of interesting turns and I am grateful to God for seeing me through. Learning, evolving and continuing to focus on being the BEST me I can be… NO LIMITS!

So yes, your girl is back and better! Better in part also to many of you and your fantastic messages and love. Big thanks to those of you who got in touch telling me that you missed the blog. Missed me, and my small contribution in the form of this blog that does its own thing. Thank you for encouraging me and for sharing ways I have inspired you. Those that know me, know that I really love this blog and what it represents. The strange goings on from a chick that loves family, friends, Brooklyn, music, makeup Trey Songz and so much more! I have missed you all and pray that you are good and life is all it needs to be for you right now- especially in these trying times!

I’m gonna end by saying THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me in the Best Makeup Artist 💄 category at last year’s AFRO MODEL AWARDS! I don’t think I will ever get over the shock of winning. It was very soon after that night that I took time out. I put shout-outs on Twitter and Facebook but let me holla on here too. I am so grateful and blessed at the recognition and hope it raises your spirits and reminds you that you can do and be anything you want to. No matter your age or the stage you’re at in life! Your journey is in your hands!

The Beauty Holder on location… Professional Beauty London 2016

Hey Loves!

Yay for Thursday! It has been a long while indeed since I did an ‘on location’ post. I enjoy being able to take you on some of my movements and I will hopefully be adding some vlogs to my YouTube channel in due course.

So Professional Beauty (PB)London 2016 rolled into town on the 28th and 29th February. By it’s own admission it is ‘the must attend event for Salon and Spa professionals‘. Think hair, nails, makeup, treatments and an awesome reason to network and learn from the best in those fields and more and you have PB in a the smallest nutshell possible.

PB London’s home was ExCel London and you can only imagine the sheer scale of the event if you haven’t been to this venue before. There were over 800 different brands under this supersize roof, showcasing all they had to offer and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I have attended in the past and this year had a bigger and more exciting feel to it. I skipped last year as the time I attended before did not provide much in the way of makeup, which is of course my speciality. This year they had a couple of my favourite brands there which reassured me I made the right decision in attending. NYX, Ingot and Crown Brushes to name a few were front and centre repping for the makeup enthusiasts. The line at NYX appeared to be never ending and was pretty much around corners and alleyways from opening to closing. I did manage to snag some goodies from the show which you will see later. I got to renew my insurance with Babtac at a discounted rate and got a great free gift from Janssen Cosmetics for doing so. Sweet!

The show really is a big draw for those in the salon and spa industry for a couple of reasons. Being able to try out the latest products first hand is a plus in any book. You’re able to get up close and personal in a way that you wouldn’t normally. You can ask questions, watch demos, take part in competitions, try things on, order in bulk and get things at a discounted trade show price, which let’s face it is always a good look. There was no ‘hard sell’ from vendors but rather a whole lot of people who were really excited about their products. The atmosphere was buzzing and infectious. Seeing spray tan teams have pep talks to manicurists give high-5s every time a purchase was made, it truly was an experience. Want custom coloured towels or uniforms? Then you this was the event for you.

As a beauty blogger there was an awesome opportunity to meet other bloggers and vendors who were looking for bloggers. Networking that looks like this takes some of the awkwardness out of approaching people you don’t know. There was a relaxed vibe that just tied it all together. I have made some great connections and am looking forward to big things continuing for The Beauty Holder this year.

My friend Miss Cat Nails debuted her new range at the show and being able to support her in this venture was the glitter on the lips or nails in her case for me. Find out more about her gorgeously amazing nail art here.

Professional Beauty will be all across the UK and Ireland this year with stops in Manchester, Dublin and Belfast. They will be stopping in India, Dubai and South Africa also this year. Worldwide and then some. They will be busy for sure!

If you’re getting overwhelmed at the thought of attending such a huge event like this and haven’t done so before, here are some Beauty Holder tips and other useful bits of info!

  • You do not have to be a professional to attend. You can go as a visitor. So even if you just love makeup or skincare for example you will still find it a great experience.
  • Have a budget in mind. Even with products at a discounted price, you can end up spending unnecessarily and get caught up. Most places accept cards but others are cash only.
  • Make a list of what you really need and find out what vendors will be in attendance. Details are out months in advance and constantly being updated.
  • If you’re a student this is for you!
  • Network on social media and any other way you want to before you attend and find out who and what will be there. Jonathan Cheban (Kim Kardashian’s bestie and Chloe Sims Towie) were there.
  • Take your food and snacks with you. You pay hefty for food and drink there. You have been warned!
  • Be prepared to queue. There is a lot to see and lots of people who want to see it along with you. Put on your comfy shoes.
  • Entry is normally free!!!!
  • There are handouts and freebies galore.
  • Lots of brow and mascara stalls too! By lots I mean LOTS!!

It is a fun day out with friends or your team if you’re able to do it.

You can see I did well to contain myself. From L. to R. Crown Brushes, Ingot Black Gel Liner 77 and my free skin care gift from Janssen Cosmetics. All in a Vegan bag! So excited to try this range so look out for a review coming soon.

Hope you enjoyed your little trip to Professional Beauty London 2016 with me.

Sweater Weather!☔️⛈❄️

Hey Loves,

Hope you’re enjoying hump day and having a great week in general!

Everyone has been commenting on what a mild winter we are having here in the UK. Where I am based in London, we have had some cool conditions but nothing like the snow storms in the US or other parts of the world. We did have some pretty gnarly wind this past weekend though and I for one was walking around looking like some windswept girl for most of it. I don’t mean windswept like Mary Poppins either!

If you checked out Cardigan Casual then you will know I am all about ease. Here are 2 of my most recent looks. Thanks to Ray Ray Milz and Lils for their picture taking skills! 🙂

NY State of Mind

Navy NY Snapback: gifted | Navy High Neck Varsity Sweater : Primark | Washed out Jeans: Matalan | Nike Air Force Ones: gifted

Just Kickin’ It

Black Knitted Hat with Bobble : H&M | Grey and Black New York 1988 Hooded Sweater : Primark | Black Mens Sweat Pants : Primark | Timberland Glastonbury Inch Boot : gifted | Backpack: birthday gift from my girl Glemzi | Black Jacket : from US

I have to tell you the second look was so how I used to dress when I came to London in 1994. Everything was baggy and hanging off me. I miss those carefree days. I think I am gonna have to keep rocking this look for a while… that is as long as my Son doesn’t bust me for wearing his sweats! 🙈

So what was your fave look? What are your staple pieces for the winter season?

Hope you enjoyed this post!

Coming up next: A Valentines Make-up Look and my fave looks of 2015!

2015! Year of the DMH!

Hey Loves!

The first month of the new year is already coming to an end. It seems crazy typing that but time does indeed fly. It seems that it is opting for some sort of space speed travel, moving quickly from year to year!

I look back at 2015 as my year of growth. Personal, Spiritual and Professional. I learnt more about myself in that year than I have probably done in my whole life. I was forced to look within to find strength that I honestly didn’t know that I had. With the hard knocks came some of my highest points and achievements. I cried, laughed, screamed, shouted and went through every emotion. I stopped blaming myself for things I could not control and started to remember who I was and what I was worth.

I did not blog nearly as much last year as I have done in previous years and I accept that that was what I needed to grow. When you stop and truly take stock of what YOU have to offer yourself, your family, friends, loved ones, colleagues and even people who you may not know you start to understand YOUR purpose.

So in a snapshot…here is a look back on 2015! Year of the DMH!

Just a couple of points… (in no particular order)

  • Key Make-Up Artist on music videos for Giggs, Lady Chan and Lady Lykes
  • Part of Julia Carta’s (Simon Cowell’s Personal Makeup Artist and Makeup Designer for The X Factor) Make-Up Team for The X Factor 2015*
  • Turned 40*
  • Dislocated my knee and had an arthroscopy*
  • Achieved my weight loss target losing more than 40kg
  • Published Make-Up in Black Hair and Beauty and Pride
  • Worked on a Road Show for Fabulous Magazine
  • Spent the whole summer with my Son and family and friends in the US
  • Took part in a fashion show for International Womens Day in Leeds
  • Restarted my Natural Hair Journey*
  • Had a little part in my Friend Nyomi’s show South Side Story
  • Photoshoots and collabs with other creatives
  • Key Make-Up Artist (assisted by Laura Garcia) for the Compliment Fashion Show
  • Held several 1:1 Make-up Classes
  • Worked with  4 Breathtaking Brides

There is so much more that happened last year that hasn’t been included above but not everything is for the blog! 😉

I will be doing some more in-depth posts on some of the key moments mentioned above. Those specifically with an * at the end. So look out for those in coming weeks.

My growth definitely doesn’t end there. With everything I learnt about myself, I now need to push forward and continue growing and evolving. It doesn’t stop there!

This post is dedicated to my sweet TJ Martin who we sadly lost in 2015. At 6 years old, TJ brought such joy and happiness to everyone he encountered. He had a diagnosis of CANDLE Syndrome which you can learn more about here. His younger Sister Tashana-Rae also has CANDLE syndrome. His Mom, Patricia Martin, is one of my dearest friends and along with her Husband, Norris, and older Sister Tyla have shown such strength. They continue to put themselves out there for others and are shining examples of courage and bravery and family. Not a day goes by that you are not missed Teej! We ❤ you always! P.s. I know you have probably taught everyone Gangnam Style in Heaven x

The family have set up a donation page in memory of TJ. All money raised will be donated to the charities who played a fundamental role in supporting TJ and the family. Someone Special TJ

Remembering always tomorrow is not promised!

What is 2016 going to be about for you?

Beauty Is… ❤ featuring Mandisa!

Hey Everyone!

It’s Friday…Yay! That means it is time for another Beauty Is… feature. It has been a couple of months since my last one and the aim is to have one each month. This month I am excited to introduce to you Mandisa (you get beauty just from her name)! One of the great things about blogging is that you meet fellow bloggers with the same interests. Mandisa co-writes a blog, DivinelyRooted about natural hair. It is an honest mix of reviews, advice and life with natural hair. Want to find out more about this natural beauty… then read below!

Beautiful Mandisa

1: Do you wear makeup?!If so, when did you start?

-I do, I started at the ripe old age of 24 LOL

2: How would you describe your makeup style?

-Natural and nude.

3: What product can you not live without? (Skincare or makeup)

-I CAN NOT and WILL NOT live without mascara! It’s the easiest thing thing to do that can brighten up your whole face in like, 26 seconds! I keep buying new ones! I’m up to 6 now 🙊🙈

4: Breakdown your beauty regime?

-For an everyday look? I’m a teacher, so it’s very simple. I don’t have time to do too much. Usually it’s just mascara, because I’m always running late. If I want a beat face, I’ll go ahead and do foundation, highlight, contour, eyeshadow, and more!

5: Who is your Beauty Inspiration or icon?

-Rihanna! Her nude looks are to DIE for and I’m still trying to recreate them.

6: Makeup nightmare?

-Not blending my highlight! Yowza!

7: Any tips or secrets?

-To not get mascara everywhere, stick your finger over your eyelid as you apply.

8: In a sentence or two, explain what beauty truly means to you?!

-Beauty to me encompasses the whole person; body, soul, and mind.

Beautifully Beautiful Mandisa

Thank you so very much Mandisa for being beauty personified and taking part in this feature! Don’t forget you can find out more about Mandisa on her blog, Divinely Rooted.

We have a Lyrical Poet with a beautiful voice in next month’s feature. Don’t miss out. Want to be featured? Just email me info@thebeautyholder.com or tweet me @thebeautyholder

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s blog post!

Have an awesome Friday and weekend!

#CopMyCloset 👢👓 : All Black Everything!

Hey Loves!

Hope you are all keeping well as we coast into the Spring season. I am back with another instalment of the above. A sneak peek into my own little fashion world and style.

Ok, so I know most Makeup Artists wear black on assignment. Why? Maybe because it seems to give off a more professional look or just for the classic and elegant look of it. There is no written rule that says you have to wear black and if I am being honest I actually prefer to wear bold colours when on shoots or working with clients. For whatever reason on this day, I chose to wear black… all black.

This was a couple weeks back where I did make-up for the Compliment Me Fashion Show in London, assisted by the lovely Laura Garcia.

AllBlackEverything ABETBHAll Black Everything

Outfit Details

High Waisted Skinny Jeans: New Look / Black Camisole: No Name $5 from New York (about 8 years ago)/ Black Lace Sweater: Asda (about 4 years old)/ Brown and Black Buckle Boots: Matalan/ Gold plated 2 Link Necklace: Primark

Everything should still be available at time this is published unless otherwise stated.

Big thanks to my fab assistant, Laura (below) for her hard work. She was thrown in at the very deep end and did the best job ever. Be on the look out for pics from the show on my Facebook page! Thank you also to the team at Compliment Me London for having us be a part of a great event benefitting Cancer Research!

Laura and TBH

If you follow me on Instagram then you’ll know that my hair and look has pretty much changed since this event! So if you’re out and you see me… don’t be afraid to say hey!

Until next time!

Couple Shades of Grey! My Valentine’s Look! 💌

Hey Loves!

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend. I didn’t do a valentines series of makeup looks this year as I really didn’t have the time. So here is a little snippet of my Vday look. I am not the biggest fan of grey makeup on myself but this super subtle and easy.

Grey Smokes Grey Smokes closed Grey Smokes products

I used mostly drugstore products for this look and i kinda threw it together. No major blending as I have a bag load of brushes to wash. Any help will be greatly received! ☺

Product listing:

Original Beauty Blender/ Milani Lipstick Teddy Bare/ L’oreal True Match Foundations in Cappuccino and Golden Cappuccino / WetnWild Eyeshadow Palette in Tunnel Vision / Eyelure Lashes in 120 and Shape and Shade Brow Pencil and Tamer in Medium Brunette to Dark Blonde/ DUO Eyelash Adhesive/ Inglot for contour (not pictured)!

My top is soooooooooooo old. No exaggeration! It is about 6 years old  (maybe more) from Primark with a little blue camisole underneath. Grey jeans and flats. Sorry I didn’t have a full pic of the outfit. I am not use to taking full body pics but I am getting there!

Valentines Love

Hope you had a wonderful day no matter whether you were coupled up or chillin’ with the homies. Either way it is about sharing love all year round and not just on the 14th of the second month of the year.

Let me know what you did. Did you go to the cinema and see a certain film with a colour in the title similar to mine? Go out to eat or something completely random?

Besos Loves! Thanks for your continued support! 💋

TBH! xoxo
