Foundation Revelation!

Image

Choosing the right foundation still seems to be one of the most daunting tasks when it comes to make-up! Truth be told, it doesn’t have to be. I mentioned in a previous blog that there have been great advances in the world of foundation and a match that is right for you is out there! It may not be as simple as one bottle in the perfect shade and may require you to dig a little deeper and get creative! What does that mean? Well, it could be anything from mixing a couple of shades together, adding a block or neutral colour to your foundation (such as white, brown, black, red or yellow) to get something uniquely you!

If I didn’t scare you with the last sentence then you’re ready for the foundation revelation! I have set myself a challenge over the next couple of weeks. I am going to work with some beautiful foundation challenged people. They are people who have not got it quite right with regards to foundation. Fear not- I was one of those people once upon a time! Will I be chasing people down in the middle of the street trying to convince them to let me help them find their best foundation match? Possibly! Those who know me, know this means a very strong YES! Ideally, I will be working with friends, strangers and anyone who wants some help foundation matching.

The real purpose behind this is to encourage people to not be afraid of make-up- especially foundation. Foundation does not equal dollar signs either. Not all foundations are expensive or break the bank. Just need to find something that fits your budget, skin type and skintone at the same time.

Here is the UK especially, there are still major disadvantages to finding the right foundation for women of colour. Most of the major brands (including drugstore brands) still do not stock shades that compliment darker skin. This should not discourage you. I am known to remind companies (via email, letter, face to face etc) that there is a huge beautiful clientele they are missing out on by not creating make-up that compliments our many shades. We will get there…someday! Until then, the option of mixing shades and buying from overseas and much more is still out there.

If I can take the shame and find any pictures of myself wearing the wrong foundation, I will post them. As a start, I have attached one. You may not see it straight away but if you look closely, you will. The shame, as this was one of my favourite facebook profile pics. If any of my friends or you want to send me pics to add to the posts, please let me know. We are going to be liberated through the ‘Foundation Revelation’! *waves foundation bottle in the air*

Quick Skin Type fixes!

Our ‘skin types’ can stay the same or change. This could be down to the weather, our chemical balance or other factors. Once you know what you’re working with, you’ll know how to give your ‘type’ what it craves!

Below are some quick tips that may help you when choosing products for your type.

Dry/ Dehydrated Skin!

Water, water and more water! You should up your internal intake of water daily. This will help to replenish the skin from the inside out!

Use a moisturiser with a strong water content. Don’t use harsh alcohol based products too often. Moisturise twice daily with a good intensive hydrating night cream.

Be cautious about only using powder as makeup. This can have a tendency to sit in fine lines and wrinkles. Try ones that have silicone or are oil-based (makeup only and not necessarily skin care products)!

Oily Skin!

Prone to more spots and breakouts, people with oily skin should also avoid high alcohol products. It can strip the skin too much and have longer term implications.

Choose a good oil- based cleanser but counteract with a oil-free moisturiser.

Makeup? Be wary of those products that have silicone or fat. They can make you look more shiny.

Combination Skin!

Your T-Zone is normally the oil magnet. Cheeks and other parts- generally dry. Find products for your type and use them where needed. This is the same guidance to be applied with moisturising. Only where you need it!

Makeup options are not all limited and just require a little trial and error.

Sensitive Skin!

Perfumes, fragrances and also live plant extracts can cause quite a bad reaction to sensitive skin. Look for hypoallergenic products but always check the ingredients!

The above also applies to makeup.

If in any doubt, speak to a skin care specialist. They mostly give free advice (samples too sometimes)! Pop in and see one at your local department store or beauty salon.

This is just for guidance and I hope you find it useful.

Beauty Basics! Things I wish I knew back then…

You know one of the many things I am starting to discover about beauty? There are so-called rules… but there are also exceptions and they can both be broken! The way I figure it, you have to be comfortable in your own skin. Why? Cause it’s your skin and no one else’s!

You CAN wear a bright pink lip with baby blue eye shadow, if you choose the shades and tones that compliment your complexion!

You CAN wear more than one colour foundation on your face at the same time… you just gotta know how to make it work.

How do you begin to know where to start? How about at the beginning! With some beauty basics!

1. Know your skin type!

This will require it’s own blog to explain but lets start with oily, dry, sensitive and combination.

Once you know what type you are, you’ll know how best to manage and look after your skin. There are many products designed with your type in mind!

2. Know your face shape!

Are you oval or long? Heart shaped or square?

Not only a useful thing to know when deciding on hairstyles but also because it gives you more makeup options! That means more chances to be creative!

You may want to use your makeup as a softener for a more prominent jaw or nose or to define and open small eyes!

Knowing your eye shape gets a special mention.

3. Know how to Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise!

Water and soap are great as a starting point, when you’re 5! Honestly, you are never too young to start a skin care regime! Ok, I lie! You are too young if you are 12 or under. That is not a rule but an opinion. It is never too late to start one though!

Check out my skin care blog for a lot more on this topic. It shares tips for layering skin care products and starting your own beauty regimes!

4. Know (and understand) your skintone!

Are you cool, warm or neutral? Have you ever chosen a foundation that looked great on your hand but washed out on your face? One that doesn’t quite blend in and look natural? Are you always a couple shades out?

Historically the above has always been an issue for Black, Indian or Asian women. I see it as an issue for all women as unless there is a factory out there churning out makeup in [insert your name here] unique shade 101, then any woman at some point has had trouble finding their unique shade (according to their skin tone).

This was many wrong shades ago. There are some great foundations on the market that are as near to perfect as perfect can be.

Those women that you see with the wrong shade foundation just need some guidance. It would also help to test foundation in natural light. Testing 3 shades you think are right in a streak/ swatch/ stripe on the side of your face (cheek to jaw) is one of the most tried and tested methods.

What this blog is saying in the most roundabout way is that sometimes all we need is a little help. A little signposting in the right direction. Some beauty basics to set us on the path to beauty perfection!

Help! I’ve run out of…

So you’re in the shower and want to exfoliate… But don’t have any left! You left your smokey eye makeup on a little too long and can’t find your eye makeup remover… What do you do?

Well, if you’re like me and want to save money, you’ll make use of the many natural ingredients in your home! Many of the things you keep in your kitchen can double up as cheap alternatives to specific beauty products!

Below are 5 quick alternatives when your beauty stock has run out!

1. Eye Makeup Remover!

Olive Oil is great for removing makeup- especially eye makeup! The oil breaks down the cosmetics (yes! even waterproof mascara) with ease. Dip a cotton pad in some olive oil and gently place over your eye. Wipe gently to remove!

2. Baking Soda Exfoliation!

Not just for keeping the fridge clean, baking soda is gorgeous for exfoliation. It is not too harsh so as to scratch the skin. Use a teaspoon of baking soda with your facial cleanser. Rub gently into the skin and then rinse!

3. Peppermint Tea Spritz!

Does your skin start looking dull halfway through the day? Want to look more refreshed? How about a peppermint tea spritzer!

Cool some peppermint tea and put in a plastic spray bottle! Hold a couple inches away from your face and spray! Your skin will feel smooth, hydrated and toned in seconds!

I’ve also done this with camomile and green tea.

4. Sugar Soft Lips!

Your lips can become dry for a number of reasons. Give them a special makeover with an soft sugar scrub.

Add some sugar to Vaseline or lip balm. Use the mixture on your lips and rub gently. Leave on for a couple of minutes and then wipe away that dead, dry skin! You should be left with soft, kissable sugar lips!

You can also use a soft toothbrush as a buffer.

5. Very Tinted Moisturiser!

All out of your fav brand of tinted moisturiser? Want a natural and even look? Then mix a little of your foundation with your moisturiser. More of the latter than the foundation but enough so that the colour is consistent.

Smooth onto your skin with your hands- they will have warmed up the mixture. Use the Peppermint Tea Spritzer for a dewy finish or powder if you want matt! All in all you should have a light tinted coverage that will last until you take it off!

Hope you find the above useful. Try them yourself and let me know how you get on!

In fact, why not share some of your own ‘homemade’ tips!
